Market Research: Dental vs. Vision Demand & the Final Expense Opportunity

A quick-reference brief to support your decision to add dental, vision, and final expense to your book of business. Built from current public data and tailored to your San Fernando Valley / Conejo Valley / Ventura County market.

Version 1.0 · June 16, 2026 · Internal planning document

The short version

Lead with dental. Demand is higher than vision, the need is concrete, and your clients are already asking for it. Vision is a natural add-on, not a standalone lead product.

Layer in final expense as the year-round anchor. It is a large, steadily growing market, it is not tied to Medicare enrollment windows, and it pairs naturally with the Medicare Supplement clients you are already serving.

Question 1

Dental vs. Vision: which has higher demand?

Verdict: Dental, clearly. Your instinct from talking to clients at your events matches the national data. Dental need is more frequent, more expensive, and more top-of-mind for seniors than vision.

~1 in 3
Medicare beneficiaries have no dental coverage at all
62%
of those without coverage skip dental care because of cost
68%
of seniors have gum disease; 96% have had cavities (CDC)

Why dental wins

  • The gap is real and widely felt. Roughly 31% of Medicare beneficiaries lacked dental coverage as of 2024 (down from 47% in 2019, but still tens of millions of people). Original Medicare covers no routine dental at all.
  • Even "covered" people are underinsured. About 77% of Medicare Advantage members have some dental benefit vs. 54% in Traditional Medicare, but Advantage dental caps (often $1,000 to $1,500/year) get used up fast by a single crown or denture.
  • Cost is the barrier, which is exactly what you solve. When 62% of uncovered seniors skip care over cost, an affordable standalone plan is a direct answer to a problem they already feel.
  • It is the demand you are personally seeing. At your community events, attendees raised dental far more than vision. That field signal is consistent with the national picture.

Where vision fits

Vision demand is real but softer. Routine eye exams and glasses are lower-cost and lower-urgency than major dental work, so seniors feel the pain less acutely. The smart play: offer vision as a bundled add-on to dental (many carriers, including the NCD / MetLife and Physician Mutual products you are training on, package them together) rather than marketing vision as its own lead product.

Question 2

The final expense opportunity

Verdict: A strong, year-round complement. Final expense is a large and steadily growing market, and it solves a problem your Medicare clients already worry about, leaving their family with funeral costs.

~$7.2B
U.S. final expense market size in 2025
~4.6%
projected annual growth rate through 2034
$50–60
typical monthly premium for a ~$10K policy

Why it fits your book

  • Year-round sales. Unlike Medicare (locked to AEP and turning-65 windows), final expense can be sold any month. It smooths out your income between enrollment seasons, which was your stated reason for diversifying.
  • It matches your clients' budgets. Many of your clients are on Medi-Cal or fixed incomes. A $50 to $60/month final expense policy is far more attainable than a $100+/month traditional life policy, and the emotional payoff (protecting family) is high.
  • Natural pairing with Medicare Supplement clients. A client who just bought a Medigap plan and has no dental and no life coverage is a warm prospect for both add-ons. One relationship, three products.
  • Rising funeral costs drive urgency. Over half of final expense policies are bought specifically to ease the financial burden on family. That is a message that resonates without any pressure.

Recommended sequencing

  1. Now: Launch dental (you have completed the training and the demand is proven). Bundle vision as an option.
  2. Next 60–90 days: Finish final expense training, then add it as the year-round anchor product, led to your existing Medicare Supplement clients first.
  3. Always: Position all three as part of one coordinated relationship, "I help you protect your health, your teeth, and your family," not three separate sales.
