I Am on Medicare Myself: Why That Makes Me a Better Dedicated Agent

There is a question I get asked often during consultations: "How do you know so much about what it feels like to go through this?" The answer is simple. I am on Medicare myself. I have sat where my clients sit. I have opened the same confusing letters, faced the same unexpected costs, and navigated the same frustrating phone calls with member services.

That personal experience is what shapes everything I do as a dedicated Medicare agent. It is not theoretical knowledge. It is lived experience.

My Own Medicare Journey

When I first became eligible for Medicare, I assumed it would be straightforward. I had been a licensed insurance professional for years. I understood health insurance inside and out. But Medicare is its own world, with its own rules, its own deadlines, and its own surprises.

The first surprise was the cost of Part B. I knew there was a premium, but the exact amount and how it was calculated based on income caught me off guard. The Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount, known as IRMAA, can significantly increase what you pay for Part B and Part D if your income exceeds certain thresholds. It is the kind of detail that does not appear in most Medicare overview brochures but has a very real impact on your monthly budget.

The second surprise was how close I came to a Part D late enrollment penalty. Because I had creditable drug coverage through another source, I thought I was fully covered. But the documentation requirements are specific, and without proper proof of creditable coverage, Medicare assumes you were uninsured. That assumption can trigger a penalty that lasts the rest of your coverage.

How Personal Experience Translates to Better Advice

When a client tells me they are confused by a letter from their health plan, I do not just sympathize. I know that feeling because I have held that same kind of letter in my hands, wondering what it meant for my coverage and my finances.

When a client tells me they are worried about an unexpected premium increase, I understand that worry personally. I have had the same conversation with my own health plan, asking the same questions my clients ask me.

This shared experience creates a level of trust and understanding that is difficult to replicate. I am not advising from a textbook. I am advising from the other side of the same experience.

What I Learned About Part B Costs

Part B premiums are not one-size-fits-all. The standard premium for 2026 is set by CMS each year, but higher-income beneficiaries pay more through IRMAA surcharges. These surcharges are based on your tax return from two years prior, which means a high-income year can affect your premiums well after the fact.

I learned this firsthand and now make it a point to discuss IRMAA with every client who might be affected. Many people do not realize this adjustment exists until they see a higher-than-expected premium on their first Medicare bill. By discussing it early, we can plan for it together and, in some cases, explore whether a life-changing event might qualify you for a reconsideration.

Why It Matters That Your Dedicated Agent Lives the System

dedicated Medicare agents who are not on Medicare themselves can certainly be knowledgeable and helpful. But there is a difference between understanding a system intellectually and understanding it from the inside. When I tell my clients what to watch for, it is because I have watched for it myself. When I warn them about a potential pitfall, it is because I have either experienced it or come close to it.

  • I know what it is like to decipher a Medicare Summary Notice
  • I know what it is like to question whether a premium increase is correct
  • I know what it is like to wonder if your medications will still be covered next year
  • I know what it is like to call member services and feel like you are not getting a straight answer
The advice I give is not theoretical. It comes from real experience, the same experience my clients are going through. That shared understanding is what makes the agent relationship work.

If you want a dedicated Medicare agent who truly understands what you are going through, because she has been through it herself, I would love to talk with you. My consultations are no-cost, personal, and completely without pressure.
