Retired military families near Naval Base Ventura County qualify for TRICARE-for-Life — but only if they enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B at 65. Here is how the two coordinate, in plain English and Spanish.
TRICARE-for-Life (TFL) is a Department of Defense benefit for retired military, retired reservists, and their family members once they age into Medicare. TFL does not replace Medicare. It wraps around Original Medicare as a secondary payer. To keep TFL after age 65 you must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B.
Many Port Hueneme retirees delay or refuse Part B at 65 because TRICARE has always been free. That is a costly mistake — without Part B, TFL coverage ends or reduces dramatically. Late enrollment in Part B also adds a permanent monthly penalty.
A 30-minute consultation with Lourdes Simons walks the VA, TRICARE, and Medicare timelines side by side. She is bilingual (Spanish first available) and serves the Port Hueneme / South Oxnard area regularly.
