If you live in Simi Valley, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, or the surrounding areas of Ventura County and you are approaching your 65th birthday, this guide is for you. Medicare enrollment is a federal program, but navigating it is very much a local experience. Where you live determines which plans are available to you, which doctors are in network, and where you can go for help.
I am Lourdes Simons, and I serve families across our community. Here is what you need to know about enrolling in Medicare right here in our area.
Your enrollment timeline
Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is a 7-month window that begins three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after. For the best coverage start date and to avoid any gaps, I recommend enrolling during the three months before your birthday month.
Here is a practical timeline:
- 6 months before turning 65: Start learning about your Medicare options. This is the time to gather your medications list, doctors list, and financial information.
- 3 months before turning 65: Your Initial Enrollment Period begins. If you are not already receiving Social Security, you will need to actively sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B through the Social Security Administration.
- The month you turn 65: This is your birthday month. Coverage can start as early as the first day of this month if you enrolled during the three months prior.
- 3 months after turning 65: Your IEP ends. After this point, late enrollment penalties may apply if you do not have qualifying coverage.
Local Social Security office
If you need to visit a Social Security Administration office in person, the nearest locations serving the Simi Valley area are in the surrounding Ventura County region. You can apply for Medicare at any SSA office, though I recommend applying online at ssa.gov or calling 1-800-772-1213 if you prefer to handle it from home.
Keep in mind that SSA offices often have long wait times, especially during peak enrollment periods. Scheduling an appointment in advance or applying online can save you significant time.
Medicare plan options in our area
Simi Valley and Ventura County residents have access to a strong selection of Medicare plans. As an independent agent, I represent 8 organizations with over 75 plan options available in our area. These include:
- Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans from several major carriers, many with $0 premiums and additional benefits like dental, vision, and hearing
- Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans that work with Original Medicare and allow you to see any Medicare-accepting provider
- Stand-alone Part D prescription drug plans for those who choose Original Medicare with or without a Supplement plan
The plans available to you depend on your zip code. During our consultation, I check which plans serve your specific area and compare them based on your doctors, medications, and budget.
Healthcare providers in our community
Our area is well-served by major health systems and medical groups. When evaluating Medicare plans, I check whether your preferred providers, including physicians at local medical centers and practices across Simi Valley, Moorpark, and Thousand Oaks, are in the plan's network. If you are established with specialists at facilities throughout Ventura County or the San Fernando Valley, network compatibility is an important factor in your plan selection.
Employer coverage and retirement transitions
Many Simi Valley residents work for larger employers or government agencies where group health coverage has been in place for years. If you are retiring and transitioning off employer coverage, the interaction between your employer plan and Medicare requires careful attention.
Key considerations:
- If your employer has 20 or more employees, you can delay Medicare Part B without penalty while you are still actively employed and covered.
- Once you leave employment or lose that coverage, you have 8 months to enroll in Part B through a Special Enrollment Period.
- COBRA coverage does not count as creditable employer coverage for the purpose of delaying Medicare. If you are on COBRA and turn 65, you should enroll in Medicare promptly.
Bilingual support available
I provide all consultations, explanations, and ongoing support in both English and Spanish. Medicare is complex enough without a language barrier, and I want every family in our community to have access to clear, personalized guidance.
Your local dedicated Medicare agent
As someone who lives and works in this community, I understand the local healthcare landscape.
